Copywriting

With a background in marketing and public relations, Laura Laing offers tight copy designed to get readers out of their seats and into action.  From theatre playbills to brochures extolling the Army’s environmental programs, these samples are just a few examples of Laura’s copywriting experience.

Kennedy Krieger Institute

Over the last two years, Laura has had the privilege of meeting a number of people who have been helped by KKI.  Parents and patients alike have offered terrific stories, many of which, Laura thinks of regularly.

When the trail committee came to Laura for assistance with their brochure, she knew just how to promote the group's efforts. According to organizers, the brochure has "instrumental in 'legitimizing' the Trail with many community groups and key stakeholders."

Laura was tasked with bringing these Army bases’ environmental sustainability programs into sharp focus.  Designed to inform and compel, this brochure was provided to all military personnel on base and distributed at conferences and other venues.

Busch Gardens Williamsburg (pdf file)
Even though she’s no fan of roller coasters, Laura brought this theme park’s newest thrill ride to life, in the fewest words possible.  The trick was packing the most descriptive words into a small space, while leaving nothing to the imagination—especially details like price, dates and special offers.

Virginia Stage Company
What does one do while waiting for the curtain to go up?  Why read the playbill of course!  Packed with behind-the-scenes details and attention-grabbing stories, her writing provided the framework for advertising and something interesting to peruse during intermission.  Because VSC is an Equity Theatre, Laura also paid close attention to union rules that dictated requirements for each playbill.

Outdoor Classroom
Once upon a time, there was an eyesore of a playspace across the street from Laura’s daughter’s school.  With lots of hard work and not a few frustrations, a team of parents is bringing new life to this space—an outdoor classroom, featuring an amphitheatre, climbing structure and community-based art projects.  Laura was invited to provide her writing expertise, and to date, more than $180,000 has been raised for this project.
